1973-S SP DDO - one or two doubled MD's???

Postby robEzerman on Sun Oct 04, 2009 11:21 am

Guys, I compared a 73-S SP still in Gov't plastic to Wiles and Wexler obverse photos.

I'm thinking that Wexler's two listed 73-S Doubled Master Dies may be one and the same, we're just looking several hubbings down-stream at two different final working die products. The two just have so many similarities (like the vertical crease in the left end of the top of the "7") one has to contemplate there is just one obverse doubled master die.

Likewise, Wexler's 73-S DDO-004 (CPG's 1973-S FS-101) to me looks like the doubled master die(s) with the addition of the marker long, curved working die scratch on Ike's neck.

I'm thinking these are all one happy family from a single obverse doubled master die - what am I missing? Rob

Your hypothesis sure has my vote! I've looked at a whole lot of these to find those dang FS-101's...and I haven't seen anything to disprove your theory.

I have looked at quite a few as well, looking for the FS-101 like Brian. I see no reason to disagree with your theory.

There are also many problems with all the supposedly different doubled dies in the Auth Reference, due to many of them being just different die states. At least that's my take on it.

Guys, thanks. Guess it's becoming reasonable to suspect clusters of very similar DD patterns as coming from the same doubled master die or working hub, especially if the doubling includes some tripling and some long thin notching. Rob
