1971-D die gouge...

Postby Sumdunce on Sun Nov 01, 2009 12:42 am

I was out and about hitting the local B&Ms today and found another anomaly.

A die gouge by the neck...

I was hoping for an FEV or a D/D but this will have to do. :D

There was no other obvious evidence of die clash so I am assuming die gouge. There is a small gouge from the top of the "E" in "WE" that did not image well. Also, the first "T" in "TRUST" appears to be DDO but the die is rather late die state so the rest of the DDO images have blended away or the DDO on the "T" is an artifact of wear.

PCGS holdered MS65.

LaMont, cool find!

In very rough numbers, 60,000,000 71-D Ikes = 500 obverse dies.

Therefore, a one-die Ike like yours is a 1-in-500 Ike. We'll have to keep our eyes peeled to find others. . . Rob

I think I read in the CU Forum there was a similar gouge on a quarter.
I think they called it a "Goiter Quarter" or something?

LaMont, turns out I have two or three more examples in my safe, were sent to me by an Ike nut to be inspected.

I checked with that individual and he graciously yields "discovery" to you since you got to the web site first and that's the determining factor.

So you have another notch on your Ike belt! With that, however, comes the lead role in naming the Die: good luck on this one!

I have some thoughts but no suggestions (yet):
.....in medicine, that bulbous image brings well-fed ticks to mind. . .
.....also "pedunculated skin tag?
......a turkey's "wattle"?
..... anatomical designations like "Adam's Apple" (Brian's suggestion) and goiter?

Have fun! Rob

I was thinking wattle since it was found in November.

Who gets credit does not matter to me. I just like to find the undiscovered (or at least the as yet unpublished). :)

<<I think they called it a "Goiter Quarter" or something?>>

That has a great rythym to it. the best I can do here in that spirit is
collar dollar.

How about "Dog Tag" in honor of Ike, the military man? Rob

"Collar Dollar" has a good ring to it and I must say, it does look like a military dog tag that
I am sure he wore for a long time!.....Some good suggestions so far!
